How to Battle Darkness
In an online Bible Study, we are reading for Lent a passage a week about Jesus’ work and life up to the time of His Resurrection. This week we are working on Mark 9:14–29. I chose mark 9:28–29 to take a deeper look.
I want to use my S.I.M.P.L.E. Bible Study Method to study today’s passage.
You can download the PDF here.
Say the passage out loud — a few times.
‘“After Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples asked him privately, ‘Why couldn’t we drive it out?’
He replied, ‘This kind can come out only by prayer (Mark 9:28–29, NIV).’”
Read it in another version:
“Afterward, when Jesus was alone in the house with his disciples, they asked him, ‘Why couldn’t we cast out that evil spirit?’
Jesus replied, ‘This kind can be cast out only by prayer.’”
Interpret the Passage:
I read Mark 3:15 which said that the disciples had been given authority by Jesus to drive out demons. In Mark 6:7 I read that Jesus sent them out two by two and gave them authority over evil spirits.
Make a List of my thoughts:
I think the power Jesus is talking about is from God and not us. Without connecting to God the disciples were unable to work against the devil. They were running on their own steam. They had forgotten to pray.
Does that happen today? Yes, I think so. Jesus has adopted us as His children and the Holy Spirit can give us the authority to do the same things that He gave His disciples the ability to do. So we can tap into that power.
But we need to:
pray to God
listen to God
and therefore have a closer connection to God
This is something I want to do more. I started reading The Power of Prayer by Charles Spurgeon. I hope I can learn more through this little book. And also A. W. Tozer’s How to Be Filled With the Holy Spirit.
Pray: Take time to say my thoughts to God and listen to Him speak
I sat in my chair and closed my eyes. I thought of the disciples unable to work the healing of deliverance of the evil spirit. I thought of Jesus’ answer. Then I was quiet.
Listen to what God tells me
This is what I heard:
How to Battle Darkness:
I do have to be careful what I ask for.
I need to be consistent in my study and prayer.
I need to trust God as much as I trust in the medical establishment. Or more.
I need routine prayer.
I need deep committed personal prayer time.
I need a prayer partner. Jesus said to be two by two. There is power in a strand of three — Jesus and two others. (Ecclesiates 4:12)
Exit the study with a personal prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for an excellent connection with You this morning. I haven’t taken the time lately to stop and listen to Your voice. The sense of Your presence was powerful, relaxing, and gentle. Thank You for reminding me that centering prayer can bring answers and Your Presence. I will make the time and effort to do this again. In Your name, Jesus. Amen.
That’s my way of studying scripture — one or two verses at a time. Please consider my offer of a free PDF of my S.I.M.P.L.E. Bible Study Method.
