I’m sitting here at 11:20 PM on a Monday night doing exactly what I’ve done for the last two years.

The ritual that’s continually calmed me down, made me who I am, and even brought me a little success as a 25-year old boy.

Yep, I still do it — even at this hour.

Even when I have 20,000 followers and don’t need to.

Why does a guy who ALREADY has the following and the numbers need to write at 11:20 PM?

I’m doing it because the keyboard is calling me.

I’m doing it because it feels right.

Wait, What Tom?

This article won’t be published on The Mission — a publication with 400,000+ followers.

It won’t be published on The Startup either — a publication with 300,000+ followers.

Heck, it won’t even be published on my own Medium publication.

It’s going to be published here, on Publishous — an interesting publication that caught my eye with 946 followers (and growing).

And I’m damn proud of that.

Why Am I Publishing Here?

I’ve gotten spoiled publishing at places like The Mission and The Startup.

In a lot of ways they helped me grow my following, but it’s time for me to do something I haven’t done in a while..

It’s time for me to forget “best practices” and follow my heart.

It’s a “best practice” for Medium writers to publish on the biggest publications and leverage their audiences to reach a wide range of people.

More views equals more email subscribers, which equals more of a captured audience you can build a relationship with later.

It’s not a good “business decision” to publish on smaller pubs.

But darn it it feels right to me right now.

And that’s magic.

Success Isn’t About Having The Right Strategy

Strategy is everything, no?

But a strategy is also boring.

Figuring out the best strategy and then milking it for all its worth sucks.

It leaves no room for the most important thing you need to make your mark on the world..

Your unique perspective on how things SHOULD be.

You can certainly be successful by having the right strategy.

But you’ll never be truly great doing what everybody else did before you.

Success Is About Doing What Feels Right In Your Heart

I’ve been complacent on this platform recently. I actually made a video about it last week👇.

I stopped innovating.

I started pushing out the same stuff. I started writing my headlines like other people. I started creating for the sake of creating — not because I actually had something new to say.

I stopped doing what felt right.

I watch the first episode from Season 4 of Chef’s Table tonight. It was glorious (watch it on Netflix).

I always see a pattern with the chefs on that show.

At some point every single subject stopped working for others and started doing something truly innovative on their own.

I freaking love that part of the show.

Because it’s something I know to be true.

When I went on my 5-month cross-country road trip two years ago, it felt right. Nobody else felt good about it, but it turned out to be the best decision of my life.

When I started writing on Medium, it felt right. No blogger told me if Medium was a good place to publish, but I did it anyway.

And that’s why I’m here, publishing on Publishous.

Life Is About Shutting Out Best Practices And Doing Your Own Thing

I want to create a movement on Medium. I want to send an avalanche of traffic to some fledgling publications. I want more fairness on this platform and I don’t want it to be dominated by self-help gurus and the biggest publications.

I want to do something about all of that.

And that’s why I’m still typing at midnight. Even when I don’t need to.

Because I want to innovate. I want to push bloggers and Medium past what it was before.

I want to finally speak the words that have been written on my soul even if doing it doesn’t give me any email subscribers (GASP).

I don’t know what this article will do FOR me. I don’t really care.

I just know that it’s what I want to do, and it’s time to be the change I want to see on this platform.

Thank you, Nicole Akers, for allowing me to publish here on this incredible publication. I’ve wanted to do so for quite some time (as you know).

For those who want to contribute here as well, follow these guidelines to submit, and give Publishous a follow!

If you want to watch me follow my heart more, check out my YouTube channel. I literally just started a daily vlog on March 30 and plan to document my 3-month trip overseas to Southeast Asia on there. I also give weekly blogging tips!
