“Sanctify them in the truth. Your word is truth.” — Jesus (John 17:17, ESV)
Jesus prayed this simple prayer for us. He asked for us to be separated (sanctified) from the world for God’s use and glory.
This is the call for every follower of Jesus.
As I look out on our cultural landscape, I see dissatisfaction, anger, narcissism, frustration, despair, greed and, even, desperation.
Despite what is happening all around us, the follower of Jesus should never feel and experience these things personally. I see in Jesus the answer to all these societal ills.
In order to share love and joy and peace with the world around us, we must first experience them ourselves. When we fully engage in following Jesus, when we completely give ourselves to the Spirit of God and devote our lives and energy to being a disciple, he fills us with love and joy and peace. In fact, the love and joy and peace he gives us is more than we can contain.
The answer to Jesus’ prayer — for us to be sanctified — is the answer the world’s needs, too. Our world, our culture, need us to be filled with all the good things God has for us so we can bring life and hope to our world.
We must allow the Word of God to penetrate our lives, his Spirit to renew us and his Son to guide us. Then, we will begin to change our world!
