“Authenticity is about being true to who you are.” Michael Jordan

When I think of the word fake politicians are the first people that come to mind. They talk and talk and talk and make false promises to get your vote.

Even when they smile you can feel how full of shit they are.

It seems that many people around us are also this way and only interested in what you can do for them.

The coworker who is nice to you only to find them talking smack about you behind your back.

The boy or girl who acts differently around you in order to get you to notice them. They don’t have the self-confidence to stand on their own.

People who act fake are full of self-doubt and do not want their feeling to be exposed. I gotta a little secret for ya….

EVERYONE doubts themselves.

Nobody is perfect nor has all the answers but are afraid to look stupid.

Many people out there believe that they will not be accepted for who they really are. They would rather fake being their true self by being someone they are not, putting on a show or acting like someone in the group to be accepted.

Never Compromise Your Values

“Never compromise your values to please other people, keep your self respect and walk away.” Sahil Paitka

Authentic people never compromise what they believe in nor should you. They don’t bend to societal rules or pressure. Their values and integrity are more important than anyone’s opinion.

James Doty who helped develop the technology for the Cyberknife became a wealthy man thanks to his career. But he is also very generous. With a net worth of $75 million, he pledged stock of $30 million to charity.

Not long after his pledge, his investments were hit hard by the dot.com crash of 2000–2001. He lost almost everything, and the only thing left was the pledged stock.

Everyone was telling him to get out of the pledge and that people would understand that his circumstances have changed. They would be forgiving, and they wouldn’t expect him to follow through.

Doty considered his options but decided to follow through with his pledge and give away the last of his fortune.

Wow, could you imagine what a difficult choice he had to make? How many people do you think would have backed out of the pledge?

Do not compromise on anything you believe in or stand for. You will be shocked at how many people will respect you for it.

Never Care or Depend On Other’s Opinions

“What other people think of me is none of my business.” Gary Oldman

The truth is not everyone is going to like you and that is ok. So why would you care what they think of you anyway?

We all want to be liked and well perceived. It is a basic human desire to feel this way.

But if you focus on everyone liking you or what their expectations are of you disappointment is sure to follow.

You may not believe it but in reality, nobody pays any attention to what you are doing. They are busy thinking the same way you are. What does everyone think of me?

Don’t stress for a second what others are thinking. You will realize what a colossal waste of time and effort this was.

Always Have Your Own Back

“Love yourself first and everything else falls in line. You really have to love yourself to get anything done in this world.” Lucille Ball

Many people are more concerned about others than they are about themselves. It is nice that you want to help your fellow man or woman, but you have to be the priority.

Just like the flight attendant on an airplane instructing you ‘put the oxygen mask on yourself before helping others’ you come before them.

Nobody is going to look after you better than you. Put yourself first and foremost and be your own best friend.

Once you take care of yourself you are in a much better position to help others.

Be Insanely Curious

I can’t stand the term “Fake it til you make it.” It means to imitate confidence, competence and an optimistic mindset, a person can realize those qualities in their real self.

Sounds to me like they are telling you to be a fraud. You should never act like this way in any circumstance.

Instead, be curious about the world around you and ingest it like a Thanksgiving dinner. Ask how things work, examine how people react, be present in your every day life.

The more you know the more confident you will feel. Faking it will no longer be an option.

Conclusion

The world we live in thrives on being inauthentic. From the office politics to the news feeding on false information to celebrities pretending to be real people.

Most of our lives are driven by bullshit distractions vying for our attention. The war for our short attention spans is at an all time high and getting worse. They will say anything to get us to watch or listen or consume inconsequential items.

But we can keep our authentic nature intact and not put it up for sale to the highest bidder.

Do not let anyone compromise your integrity no matter the price. It is the most important thing you can keep that nobody can take from you.

People are way too self-consumed about their lives to pay attention to what you do. Don’t put any stock into what they think of you or anything that is happening in your world.

You are number 1 always. Take care of yourself first and be your own best friend and biggest supporter.

Always be present in your surroundings and experience all that life has to offer. Question how and why things happen or how they work.

Being authentic develops the confidence you need to handle almost anything in life with ease. People will take notice and treat you with more respect and realize you are not a fake.
