Look, Mom, no hands!

Remember when you were young and free? You were the star of your own show?

The feeling comes from being bold and brave. It’s like a child who goes to the circus to play because it’s fun. Standing in front of the funhouse mirror and believing we are what we see for better or for worse.

Some of it is a lie.

As adults, we want the success of that brave moment that was neither hindered or a lie but embraced with authenticity and truth.

It’s okay to embrace your inner kid and have fun, but we need to quit lying to ourselves too. We need to stop seeing the nip and tuck in places where they aren’t, overembellishing our strengths and hiding our flaws.

We need to stop lying to ourselves and to each other.

Nearly 85% of job applicants lie on their resume.

Are you lying?

  • Are you afraid of being found out?
  • Is your public image as though you are standing in front of a funhouse mirror?
  • Are you lying to the world?
  • Are you lying to yourself?

Where is your genuineness to be authentically bold and brave?

Dig it out from under the rock its been hiding under and embrace it this year.

My friend, Randy Shingler, exhibits being bold and brave while living a life of peaceful tranquility. We’ve been connecting in many ways for many months. Over Thanksgiving, we had a rare opportunity to meet for coffee when he came to visit his family in my hometown.

Randy met my girls. I’m not sure which one he associates as “bold” and which one he associates as “brave”, but I have a good guess. We affectionately call them Bold and Brave as we engage on social media.

He brought a gift for my girls, this book, Bold and Brave by Kirsten Gillibrand:

I hope the qualities he sees manifesting themselves in my girls he also sees in me.

The book is about brave and bold women in history. We’ve been slowly studying each woman and her impact on history and the ripple effect of her efforts in present day.

Yesterday I saw those qualities in him.

An unforeseeable event caused our scheduled guest for @Publishous #PubChat on Twitter to be unavailable. I extended an invitation to Randy and he didn’t hesitate. Only a few moments passed before I received his resounding “Yes”!

He wasn’t quite sure of the format or what to do, but there was no question about his yes.

Brave and Bold.

He was authentic and his genuineness came through with a warm reception. You can still catch the inspiration under #PubChat.

He stepped up in a moment’s notice without hesitation. This piece isn’t just about Randy, but about the brave and bold the qualities in all of us.

Challenge yourself.

What will happen if you challenge yourself in an unexpected way?

What’s the worst that can happen?

You might:

  • grow personally
  • grow professionally
  • develop a new skill
  • earn more money
  • be better than you were yesterday

I’m challenging you to step into something you wouldn’t otherwise do this year. Embrace something that you are uncertain of, something that you know is good for you and that scares you a little.

Be bold and brave.

Bring these qualities with you as you answer the call.

Integrity: the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles; moral uprightness.

Ethics: moral principles that govern a person’s behavior or the conducting of an activity.

Whether writing your own book or your life adventure, we’re traveling to new places and sending well wishes for a happy, healthy journey.

Keep in mind that to be authentic is to be of undisputed origin; genuine.

You are the author of your own story.

You get to choose your own adventure. The story is yours for the making. The reins are in your hands and the brass ring is yours for the taking if you do it well.

What images do your authorship hold?

Will you be authentic or will you stand in front of the funhouse mirror?

Write your life story this year and author it well.

Make ripples that matter.
