When my husband and I were younger, Mark decided to take Tae Keon Do for exercising purposes. I was all for it. It was a desire he’d had for years. We discussed sending our children (at that point they weren’t even teens yet) with him. We figured this would help them gain more discipline. Unfortunately, we didn’t have the money for my husband to continue so they never got to go.
Fast-forward to December 2018. Mark and I began talking about our daughters learning martial arts. The only problem I had was I could see my oldest daughter deciding she didn’t like what I said and using martial arts on me.
When my husband suggested us go as a family, I grew very interested. We spoke with a friend whom we thought was already doing it. Come to find out she knew someone but hadn’t started it yet. It wasn’t Tae Kwon Do, but Kempo.
My husband contacted the sensei about everything involved. He was very nice and invited us to visit and watch. All six of us did the day after Christmas.
It looked as scary to me that time as it did whenever I watched my husband do his Tae Kwon Do. I was really nervous and wondered if I would make it.
The sensei gave us some of the history then told us to think about it and let him know.
As our family returned home, we discussed it. The decision was unanimous as we agreed to begin in the New Year. Despite our fears, we can experience this together as a family. I look forward to sharing more of our journey as a family into martial arts!
