Confession: I don’t usually watch/read the news or read the paper.

So, today I updated the OS on my Mac to Mojave, and while I’m truly digging Night Mode (especially that the desktop background is the nighttime version of the same sand dune shown in the regular version), much of the stuff affecting me is unchanged.

With one glaring exception.

There were two new icons in my Dock (at least I think that’s what Apple calls the bar across the bottom — the “toolbar” for you Windows users).

I’m guessing the new Screenshot app icon just replaced the Grab icon that was already there, so I’ll say that I really just got one new icon:

News

The “News” app icon

I wondered about this strange new icon in the Dock. To me, it just looked like three slashes on a pinkish-red backdrop. After seeing that it was titled “News”, I realized it was a stylized “N”.

So, to slake my curiosity, I clicked on this mysterious new piece of intellectual property that had just been given me.

Lo and behold, it was a news app (queue sad whanh-wha-wha music).

Quite anticlimactic for someone who prefers not to partake in such falderol.

Nevertheless, I decided to click around and see what “news” I might be missing out on.

Turns out, the US is going to hell in a hand basket.

And it’s all Trump’s fault.

OOH! This just in — a notification!!!!! (From the News app)

My credit score could get a bump in 2019 when FICO changes its algorithm!

I’ll let you guess my reaction to that notification. Was it:

a) Heck yeah! I love bumping my FICO score!!

or was it

b) Where did these notifications come from? And how do I shut them off?

(Hint: Credit scores are basically a reflection of how much debt you have and how good you are at managing it. I am happily debt free and haven’t had a credit card or car loan in 14 years.)

Back to the News

To head off any kind of political debates (I despise politics, and I don’t really care which side of the aisle you sit on), I’ll say that I thought the news media was telling us that America was going to hell in a hand basket and it was all Obama’s fault.

Or was it Bush?

Or maybe Clinton?

Wait a minute. As my six-year-old would say “I see a pattern!” (though she pronounces it PAT-er-IN). It seems that the news media is always telling us that the country is on a terminal slide — and it’s ALWAYS the president’s fault.

No matter who the president is.

Maybe they’re only telling us this, because we click on those types of stories.

And those clicks help them sell ads.

Which in turn makes the media companies MILLIONS.

I guess it’s OK if the country goes to hell, as long as you can cash in.

Right?

Let’s see if I remember how to do this> Right click > Uncheck “Keep in Dock” > Click “Quit”.

That’s better.

(Here, I intended to show a Screenshot of my Dock without the News icon, but the Screenshot app is not responding. I guess Apple got mad at me.) HA!
