Sometimes you have to go through the pain, to experience the joy.
Life is full of messy things.
Really messy things.
Sometimes we make our own mess. And other times the mess is made by someone else, sometimes even without our knowledge.
Nonetheless life is a messy ordeal.
There are many different ways of dealing with the mess. Sometimes we make it through pretty much unscathed, and sometimes we come out a little beaten and broken. Sometimes the mess is easy to wade through, only ankle deep. And sometimes it is over your head, making you feel like you might drown before you make it to the other side.
But the great thing (and not so great thing sometimes) about life is that you have to go through it.
No matter what happens, no matter how you choose to do it, you have to push through whatever you are experiencing.
Because it is in the mess we find the real sustenance of life.
Sometimes we have been hurt by someone else.
Sometimes we want to avoid the mess that has happened.
We think that maybe if we close our eyes to whatever it is that we are going through that it will somehow disappear. That maybe if we can just avoid it a little longer, it will no longer be.
Life doesn’t work that way.
If you want to move and not be stagnant you have to face your fears and move forward. You have to go through the pain and anguish in order to become a better version of yourself.
It is the only way to make progress.
Sometimes the turmoil you feel is internal.
Sometimes the mess you are going through is self-inflicted.
The hardest thing in the world is to look inside of yourself. To really look. To see all the dark and ugly places. The places you overlook most of the time. The ones you don’t want anyone else to see.
It is in those places we find the pieces of ourselves that we want to shy away from.
When we take out those pieces, examine them, and start to put them in their proper place it can be painful. It can be a long, difficult, drawn-out process. Sometimes we need other people to help us look at those pieces, and help us sort out what we should do with them.
It is a mess.
It is a wonderful, hard, beautiful, awful, amazing mess.
If you want to get over something in life, you must go through it.
It is the only way.
