How did you make the world around you better?
“The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.”
― Ralph Waldo Emerson
Recently, I have taken some time to reflect on my life. I have taken the time to acknowledge some truths about who I used to be and who I am trying to be these days.
One of those truths is that when I was in my 20’s, I lived by the idea of “how much can I get for myself?”
As I have gotten a little older and wiser, things have changed. My whole mentality is different now.
Here is one question I find myself continuing to ask on almost a daily basis now:
Who did I help today?
For those of you that have read several of my Blog posts, you know that I talk a lot about altruism. I write a lot about helping others and making the world a better place. It doesn’t matter if it is through your written word, your spoken word, or your actions.
But how are you actually improving the world around you?
Who did YOU help today?
A very good friend of mine recently told me about a friend of his named Tasha. She wants to make some serious changes in her life. Tasha wants to get her photography out there in front of more people. This young lady is an amateur photographer, but if you ask me, there is nothing amateur about her work. The pictures she takes are fantastic and extremely impressive.
My buddy told me perhaps I could help her build her brand online and show her how to break away from her current jobs so that she can be doing what she is passionate about, which is her photography.
I met with this young lady yesterday for coffee to discuss what her goals are and what I can do to help her achieve them. I also found out from her that she used to love writing but hasn’t been able to do it in a while.
Well, all that is about to change!
And so there we were having coffee together and discussing her goals, hopes, and dreams. I couldn’t help but feel inspired by her.
Tasha has been through a lot of ups and downs this past year alone. I don’t want to ruin all the suspense for you guys because she will be writing a lot of articles here on Medium.
Tasha Runnels will be sharing her experiences, her photography and most importantly, she will be chasing after her passion.
Just like many of you are doing.
I am confident she will achieve amazing things not just as a Blogger but as a Photographer too.
I Shared My Struggles With Her
Together, we got her Medium account set up and I was able to show her the ins and outs of how this platform works. I talked to her about some of the struggles I had when it came to starting up my own Blog and trying to gain a loyal following.
It has been a crazy 14 months!
Tasha told me she used to write but then stopped for a while. Work got in the way and so did life in general. I know many of you reading this can relate to the struggle that we Writers face. Life often throws us curve balls and sometimes it’s hard to fit time in to write and hone your craft.
I showed her some strategies I use to fit writing into my busy schedule. I talked to her about the power of reading and jumping head first into Blogging. We talked about making lots of mistakes and learning from them. One of the main things I told her to always remember is that her writing is good enough. I told her she is always good enough and to not be afraid to share her experiences with the world.
I opened up about how I too used to be afraid that maybe my writing wasn’t very good and that no one would be interested in reading about my experiences.
It felt great to be able to coach her and help her. Everything we talked about revolved around her goals and her aspirations. I was proud to just be apart of her excitement and help a good person like her break away from the chains that society places on us.
Tasha wants to be her own boss and she wants to do what she loves. I love her spirit and I can tell she is very determined to produce high-quality writing for everyone that comes across her Blog.
That’s why I am asking you, who did you help today?
I know it’s easy to always focus on you and your needs. It’s easy to focus on your goals and aspirations. Trust me, anyone that knows me knows that I am an extremely ambitious and goal-driven person. Yet, I have learned that often times, when you help someone else accomplish their goals, they will turn around and help you accomplish your goals too.
Too often now we live in our own little bubble and we forget about our fellow man or fellow woman.
But, I challenge you to step outside of your comfort zone. I challenge you to focus your energy on helping someone else today. Put yourself in their shoes and empathize with them. Do your best to understand their struggles and their pain.
Live a more fulfilling life by helping others.
You will reap what you sow.
