Be still for a moment and read the title once again…

How long did it take you to read? Two, three seconds, perhaps?

If you can read that and derive something from it, then you’ve accomplished a great feat. You’ve managed to tap into the stillness that lies within you.

What is stillness?

Stillness is our essential nature — Eckhart Tolle

Stillness is the awareness you just tapped into; the space in which the words on this page are being processed and perceived to become thoughts. Without that awareness, there would be

-no recognition

-no perception

-no meaning

-no thought

Simple as that.

You and I are as simple and pure as that stillness. We are that awareness, disguised (if we may) — disguised as a person.

The equivalent of external noise is the inner noise of thinking.

The equivalent of external silence is inner stillness. — E.Tolle

And all that’s required of you and me to reach that place is to be still and pay attention.

Do it again

Read the title again. Do you notice how at the moment you’re paying attention to the words you are not thinking? You’re not! You are aware, but you are NOT thinking.

You are still.

You are aware.

You are present.

***

In the comfort of my home, I need silence around me in order to read and understand what I’m attempting to read. You might not; you might be one of those gifted ones who thrives best when there’s background music. Is that you? Amazing.

Yet, I can spend hours reading in a lively coffee shop and reap great benefits from the experience. You too? Wonderful.

As it turns out, silence IS helpful BUT not necessary to find stillness.

Any disturbing noise can be as helpful as silence. How? By dropping your inner resistance to the noise, by allowing it to be as it is — this acceptance also takes you into that realm of inner peace that is stillness. Whenever you deeply accept this moment as it is — no matter what form it takes — you are still, you are at peace. — Eckhart Tolle, The Power of Now

…And that my friends, is the inner space of pure awareness — consciousness itself.
